Electricity is named after the greatest invention of the 20th-century engineering achievements by the United States’ National Academy of Engineering. It has been recognized as a very important ingredient for the economic growth of a country. It is predicted that the world’s electric energy consumption and generation will be greatly increased from years to years.
However, researchers have shown that not all electricity generated is efficiently utilized. Domestic housing is identified as one of the major contributors to energy wastage. A home energy management system (HEMS) offers a significant solution to increase energy consumption efficiency where the homeowners can effectively monitor and control their usage, of which is a big environmental bonus as well (i.e., fewer carbon emissions). A market survey also shows that there are worldwide growing interests and investment in energy management systems and services.
Therefore, in this project we propose to design and develop an energy management system based on Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology. IoT offers interconnection of home appliances with the owner as well as the utility companies through the internet. Subsequently, this will provide control and monitoring of home energy usage by the electrical appliances from anywhere and at any time. Raspberry Pi 3 will be used as the main controller and gateway platform, while FAVORIOT IoT middleware is used as the cloud and Enterprise Application Software (Dashboard).
