Moreover, existing vehicle monitoring systems in the market mostly use Global Positioning System (GPS) to estimate the vehicle’s speed and location which results may be inaccurate once the data network coverage changes according to the route traveled by the vehicle.
Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop a system called Smart Vehicle Monitoring and Analysis System (VMAS). The system is able to monitor and analyze the car engine parameters such as engine temperature, speed, brake status measurement and mileage through the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) device as well as a cloud database management system for data storage and analysis.
It provides real-time data upload, service alert notifications, GPS location tracking and reacts to accident detection by sending email or SMS to pre-defined emergency services or personnel via FAVORIOT‘s platform. The cloud server can be accessed remotely by authorized or administrative personnel via a monitoring webpage. The user-friendly web-browser will provide complete visibility uploaded data in real time as well as instant activities reports and history logs.
It is foreseen that the proposed IoT based Smart VMAS can be a potential solution for improving road safety as people will be mindful of their driving attributes in order to secure low road tax payment as well as a virtual black box in case of accidents. The extracted data can also be used for other purposes such as issuing premium from insurance companies and diagnostic tests by vehicle manufacturers.
